Biography

Laumape originally played rugby union, touring Britain and Thailand with the Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

At 22-years-old he then signed with the New Zealand Warriors, switching to rugby league and playing in the 2012 NYC. He became the club’s top try-scorer in the junior competition with 16 tries.

Laumape is a rugby league convert, having left the New Zealand Warriors in 2015 to join the Manawatu Turbos.

Laumape made his debut for the Hurricanes in the 2016 Super Rugby competition, starting in the inside centre position against the Brumbies and scoring his first professional rugby union try. He made another 10 appearances and scored 3 further tries for the Hurricanes that season.

He entered the 2016 season coming off an ACL rupture, was rusty after four years in rugby league and his 2016 form for the Hurricanes wasn’t overly impressive.

But this season has been marked by one dominant performance after another, as Laumape’s scored 14 tries through 13 games this season.

Laumape has consistently barrelled through opposing defences and has been widely tipped to succeed Ma’a Nonu in the 12 shirt for the All Blacks with his similar style of play.

In June 2017, the uncapped Laumape earned his first All Black call-up ahead of their three Test matches against the British & Irish Lions.

Laumape debuted off the bench in the 2nd Test and started the third.

After the Lions Series, Laumape returned to the Hurricanes and helped the side to the semi finals where they lost to Johannesburg-based side Lions.

He scored his 15th try in the semi finals and equaled the record for the most tries scored in a Super Rugby season.

Laumape heads into the 2018 Super Rugby as a 4-test cap All Black (1 Try) and will look to add to his impressive try scoring record with Canes that has seen him score 19 tries in 28 games.
