Biography

Karl experienced a meteoric rise in 2018, seeing him become an All Black and earn a nomination as the World Rugby Breakout Player of the Year.

Karl attended Wesley College alongside future All Black representatives Nepo Laulala, Malakai Fekitoa and Augustine Pulu.

His first class rugby debut came in 2015 for North Harbour. That same year he went to France to play for the Pro D2 side, Narbonne. Karl returned to New Zealand for the 2016 ITM Cup with North Harbour. He become a regular feature for North Harbour in 2016 with fierce scrummaging and solid ball carrying but unfortunately suffered an injury which precluded a return to Narbonne and France for 2017.

Instead of a return to Narbonne, Karl worked hard on his rehab and conditioning in NZ and had a great 2017 ITM Cup campaign. In 2018 Karl earned his first Super Rugby cap the Chiefs. His scrummaging was exceptional and it wasn’t long before the All Blacks took notice. No more than 3 months after his Super Rugby debut came his first All Blacks cap, against France and he has not eased up.

In 2019 Karl joined the Auckland Blues and continued to demonstrate his ability and his remarkable rise as a strong scrummaging prop with real skills around the park.

Karl came back with a point to prove in 2020, having missed out on the RWC 2019 squad and his strong form was rewarded with a recall to the All Blacks for the 2020 Rugby Championship campaign.
